How to offer Net 30 on Shopify

Net 30 wins wholesale orders. Set it up carelessly and it also wins you a pile of unpaid invoices. Here is how to do it properly.

Step by step

  1. Write your trade terms

Before anyone orders, set out the payment term, the credit limit, what happens when payment is late, whether cards saved at checkout may be charged on the due date, and, for UK buyers, your right to statutory late payment interest.

  2. Vet the buyer

Ask for company details, a trade reference or two and, for larger accounts, a credit check. Start new buyers on a low limit or a first order paid upfront.

  3. Create the company in Shopify

In Shopify admin, add the company, its locations and contacts, and assign the right B2B catalog.

  4. Set payment terms on the location

Choose Net 30 as the default term for the company location. You can also require a saved card at checkout, which makes due-date collection possible.

  5. Set a credit limit and hold rule

With Terms Due, give the company a limit and decide when new orders should be held.

  6. Turn on reminders

Schedule a heads-up before the due date and firmer reminders after it, by email and text.

  7. Review monthly

Use the aging report to spot buyers who are drifting later, and adjust limits or terms before it becomes bad debt.

Net 30 from the invoice or from the order?

Be explicit in your trade terms about when the 30 days start. Counting from the order date is simplest, and is how most merchants read the due date Shopify shows on an order placed on terms. If you prefer to count from dispatch, use due on fulfilment or a fixed date instead.

Should you offer Net 30 or Net 60?

Offer the shortest term your buyers will accept. Longer terms tie up more of your cash and make late payment more likely. Our guide to credit limits compares Net 30 and Net 60 and shows how limits and terms work together.
